How it works

Change amount = original × percentage ÷ 100. For an increase, add the change; for a decrease, subtract it.

Formula / calculation method

  • change amount = |original| × percentage ÷ 100
  • increase result = original + change amount
  • decrease result = original − change amount

Worked examples

  • Increasing 200 by 10% adds 20 and gives 220.
  • Decreasing 200 by 10% subtracts 20 and gives 180.

The percentage is applied to the original value. A decrease above 100% can produce a negative result, which may be mathematically valid but not meaningful for every real-world quantity.

No. The second percentage is applied to the new value, so the bases differ.
