How it works

Markup amount = cost × markup% ÷ 100. Selling price = cost + markup amount. Gross margin% = markup amount ÷ selling price × 100.

Formula / calculation method

  • markup amount = cost × (markup % ÷ 100)
  • selling price = cost + markup amount
  • margin % = markup amount ÷ selling price × 100

Worked examples

  • A 25% markup on a cost of 100 adds 25 and gives a selling price of 125.
  • A 100% markup on 50 adds 50 and gives a selling price of 100, which is a 50% gross margin.

Common questions

Is 50% markup the same as 50% margin?

No. A 50% markup on cost produces a margin of about 33.33% on the selling price.
