Why area factors are squared
A foot is exactly 0.3048 meter. Because area is two-dimensional, converting square meters to square feet uses the square of the linear meter-to-foot relationship rather than the linear factor itself.
Temperature is not a simple multiplier
Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points as well as different degree sizes. The conversion therefore needs both a scale factor and an offset. At −40, the two scales have the same numerical value.
